His Highness Sheikh Hamdan bin Rashid Al Maktoum

One of the most prominent, pioneering and successful owner / breeders of the Arabian racehorse is His Highness Sheikh Hamdan bin Rashid Al Maktoum.  A member of the ruling family of Dubai he is the UAE Minister of Finance and the Deputy Ruler of Dubai.

Horseracing (both Thoroughbred and Arabian) are his passion and HE is the patron of Shadwell Stud (a global Thoroughbred and Arabian breeding and racing operation) and of the Dubai International Arabian Races (DIAR) programme.

His Highness is still a very keen supporter of the traditional Arabian breed.  In the UK and UAE he is a leading owner and breeder of Arabian racehorses.  Part of his remit for the Shadwell operation is to educate the race-going public about the Arabian breed and encourage a wider range of people to become involved in and to engage with the sport of Arabian horse racing and the Arabic history and culture which underpins it.  To that end, Shadwell have sponsored Arabian horse races in Australia (in association with NARA (National Arabian Racehorse Association of Australia) at both Caulfield and the Gold Coast Racecourses in previous years.

In a more focused effort to carry out the wishes of HH Sheikh Hamdan, all Arabian race sponsorship was transferred to the DIAR programme (Dubai International Arabian Races) in 2014.  Since then the DIAR Committee (made up of advisors from the UAE) and the planning committee (located at Shadwell’s UK head-quarters) have been working towards a programme of Arabian race sponsorship which supports Arabian racing industries at all levels of their development.

2016 sees the re-introduction of Shadwell’s sponsorship of Thoroughbred racing in Australia with a full card of Thoroughbred racing on this day.
